The dietary supplement and nutraceutical industries are approaching a 100 billion dollar per year industry. Approximately 1 in 2 households in the USA use dietary supplements which broadly defined includes: vitamins, minerals, herbs and other botanicals, as well as amino acids and anti-oxidants. Nutraceuticals are nutrients from foods, as well as dietary supplements, used for the purpose of preventing or treating a disorder or disease. Yet despite all of this demand for these 'natural medicines' to keep or make us healthier, there is an overriding uncertainty about their efficacy, standardization and in some cases, their safety.

Federal regulations in most countries are significantly less stringent compared to regulations in place governing pharmaceuticals, other biologics and medical devices. This is presumable because natural medicines pose less of a safety risk. Therefore, pre-clinical (testing in labs) and clinical (testing in humans) has not been required.

Many companies who make these products would love to test the safety and efficacy of their products. But without adequate R & D funding, which can often exceed several hundred thousand dollars to test their products, these manufacturers have been unable to clinically test their products - until now.
